What is a carcinogen?
So what is carcinogen and how it induces cancer. Cancer is caused by mutations in cells. These alterations can be inherited from parents and can happen due to exposure to many environmental things. These may include factors like lifestyle (diet, physical exercise ), cigerette smoking, exposure to various radiations, pollution.
These elements are called as carcinogens and they change human body cells.
Not all Carcinogens will cause cancer. Substances labeled as carcinogens may have different levels of cancer-causing potential. There are many factors which are involved here. Like how much was the exposure, how long some one was exposed to Carcinogens, and how intense it was. This also varies as per persons and their genetic makeup.
Many Chemicals and products are capable of inducing cancer in humans or animals after prolonged or excessive exposure. These chemicals are known as carcinogens , which are responsible for inducing cancer. For example :fumes of the metals cadmium, chromium and nickelare known to cause lung cancer.
Sometimes,it takes long period to develop cancers, for instance in case of chemically induced cancers, or mesothelioma due to exposure to asbestos. Sometimes, it takes as much as 30 years to be observed.
In simple terms, Carcinogen can also be defined as any substance, radionuclide, or radiation that is an agent directly involved in causing cancer.
The term carcinogen defines any substance , which can be chemical or mixture of chemical substance, or radiations, that can induce cancer in human body. Or even can increase its incidence.
One exmaples of carcinogen may include asbestos, prolonged exposure of which may cause lung lining cancer,
Now what is carcinogenicity?
