Interview refers to the face to face interaction of two or more individuals in a particular setting. There are two types of interview -:
- Structured Interview -: In a structured interview there are a set of questions asked by the interviewer to the interviewee, answer to these questions are also in yes / no form.
- Unstructured Interview -: This is also called as open – ended interview, in this the interviewer is free to ask whatever s / he wishes and the interviewee can also answer in his / her own words.
Tips during the interview -:
- Plan your interview attire -: Choose the attire according to the dress code of the company. If you don’t know the dress code then go to the interview in a formal dress. Don’t go to an interview in casuals as it might not give a good impression on recruiters.
- Practice greetings for your interviewer or recruiter -: Always remember to greet interviewer or recruiter with a friendly smile and a firm handshake (initiated by the recruiter) and the handshake should not crush the fingers of the recruiter. If you did this right you will set the right energy for the interview and chances that the interview will go well will increase. This small step should always be well prepared for the interview.
- Carry the copies of your resume -: Don’t forget to carry the copies of your resume along with you and also highlight the points / specific accomplishments on your resume copy so that you can easily refer and discuss.
- Study everything related to your resume -: Your resume is what the interviewer goes through to know you. There are high chances that they will pick up things out of your resume and will ask in the interview. So, it’s important that you have good knowledge of your skills.
- Practice answers to the most common interview questions -: You can search for the common interview questions asked on google and prepare your answers in advance. Some of such questions are “Tell me something about yourself,” “Why do you want to get hired for this job, etc.”
- Research about the company post you have applied for -: Have a great understanding of the company and post you have applied for. Note down the questions you have and ask them during the interview. It’s always beneficial if you ask some intelligent questions during the interview which shows your efforts.
- Arrive 10 – 15 minutes early -: Try reaching 10 – 15 minutes early to the interview place. Being late also gives the wrong impression on the interviewer. If you reach early you can sit wait and observe the workplace dynamics.
- Make a great first impression -: Remember first impression is the last impression so the first impression matters a lot. Take care of little things like shoes are properly polished, nails are clean and tidy, clothes are proper there should be no loose thread or stain. While walking in show confident body language and a smile throughout.
- Treat everyone with respect you meet -: Treat everyone with respect as if they are your hiring managers though they are not they can be asked for the feedback later.
- Body language -: Body language plays a very important role. It is necessary that you show body language according to the settings or need.
Be confident, stay calm from the moment you enter the building. Before the interview take a deep breadth and exhale slowly this helps in managing anxiety and encouraging self – confidence.
Important -: The interviewer should first initiate the hand for the handshake and it should be very firm, it should not crush the fingers of the interviewer. Stand look in the eye of the interviewer and smile. The way you sit, talk, your gestures everything matters. Sit on the edge for the chair with back straight and speak with a smile throughout which shows you as confident.
- Stay positive and genuine -: Keeping yourself positive and genuine throughout the interview with a good body language which help the employers to relate easily with you and to keep the interview light and constructive.
- Respond honestly to the questions asked -: Interviewers find for honesty while recruiting so focus on your key strengths and why your background makes you uniquely qualified to the position.
- Keep the answers specific and focused -: The time for interview is limited so be specific. Practicing your answers before hand can also help you to stay focused.
- Ask for future steps -: When the interview ends ask the recruiter about further steps which are going to be follow up email with results, assignments or another interview.
- Walk confidently -: As the interview ends say thank you to the recruiter or interviewer and walk out confidently and don’t forget that until you are in the building you are being observed so stay calm.
