Careers in Psychology

Psychology simply refers to the scientific study of mind, experiences and behavior.

In the current scenario of the world, mental health is becoming more worst than the physical health of humans, therefore the demand of the psychologist increasing.

Different careers in psychology -:

  1. Clinical Psychologist -: Clinical psychologist focuses on the emotional, behavioral, psychological, biological, aspects of human behavior. The main role of clinical psychologist is to focus on the assessment, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mental disorders.

The requirement for becoming a clinical psychologist is -:

B.A in psychology, MA/MSc in clinical psychology and MPhil in clinical psychology.

2) Counseling Psychologist -: Counseling psychologist deals with social, vocational, emotional, health related, organizational and emotional concerns of an individual. They help people in coping with daily life problems including career and educational issues. Counseling psychologist works with NGO’s, private set-ups, therapy centers.

The requirement for becoming counseling psychologist is -:

B.A in psychology, MA in counseling psychology.

3) Child / Developmental Psychologist -: It is a very vast area. It studies that how human beings develop through the lifespan. They deal with the emotional, cognitive, psychomotor, social development of infants and children.

The requirement for becoming a child psychologist is -:

B.A in psychology, MA in child psychology / clinical psychology, PhD which focuses on research or a Psy. D which focuses on clinical practices.

4) Sports Psychologist -: They focus on the well-being of the athletes sportsperson. The role of sports psychologist is to help the sports person in improving their performance including his/her cognitive, emotional, motivational and physiological factors. Sports psychologists are good in demand. They can work with sports team, Sports coaching center, academics and sports league.

The requirement for becoming sports psychologist is -:

B.A in psychology, MA in clinical, counseling or sports psychologist.

5) Industrial / Organizational Psychologist -: They deal with the workplace behavior and organization both. They focus on training employees, improving work conditions, and developing criteria for selecting employees.

The requirement for becoming industrial psychologist is -:

B.A in psychology, MA in Industrial Psychology.

6) School Psychologist -: School Psychologist deal with students and their problems at different levels of education. They also work with families, school administration and teachers to ensure safe and supportive environment for learning.

The requirement for becoming school psychologist is -:

B.A in psychology, M.A \ MSc in psychology.

7) Career Psychologist -: They help people in career guidance, they are similar to school psychologist only the difference is that they deal with people of all ages. People come to them complaining about the dissatisfaction about their job dissatisfaction, stress at work, burn out, anxiety, depression, etc. Career psychologists are the best to deal with such problems.

B.A in psychology, M.A \ MSc in psychology.

8) Forensic Psychology -: Forensic Psychologists deals with the criminals, their motives behind crimes etc. They work with jails, rehabilitation centers, forensic labs etc. They also play an important role in understanding the psyche of the criminals.

The requirement for becoming career psychologist is -:

B.A in psychology, M.A \ MSc in psychology. (Licensure required in most states; certification in forensic psychology specialty available.)

9) Neuro Psychologists -: They focus on assessment and treatment of patients with brain injury or neurological disease. Neuropsychology is a specialized field in psychology which is very much related to the clinical psychology. They are also involved in doing the research work and then making different models which help us in understanding and differentiating between normal and abnormal functions. They are also involved in studying different neurological diseases like Alzheimer, Schizophrenia, Parkinson’s etc.

The requirement for becoming career psychologist is -:

B.A/ BSc in psychology, MA/ MSc in clinical psychology and Phd in neuropsychology.

10) Military Psychology -: Military psychologist deal with military personals and their families. Very often military personals suffer from PTSD, stress, depression etc. Military psychologists work with them and help them staying mentally fit and healthy. Military psychologists are taken into army, air force, navy, special forces etc.

The requirement for becoming career psychologist is -:

B.A in psychology, MA in psychology or some institutes also offer masters in Military psychology.
