Common mistakes during an interview

There are many small mistakes which are very common and can lead to rejections in interviews.

One of the most important thing is to focus on the verbal expressions that will help us in getting

our jobs. All applicants may have same type of degrees , resumes  and  experiences but we

can differ our self  by  our expressions and way of talking.

While interview we have to focus on our verbal cues so that we can make good impression over the interviewer.

 1) Hand shake : It depends on you how you can do it. Always try to hand shake in a

soft and firm manner . Never try it so hard as to break the bones

2) Eye contact : eye contact is an important key factor during an interview. Too much

of eye contact leads to irritation and aggression while little eye contact makes you

dishonest and as if you are not interested in the task or you  are hiding yourself. So always

try to make balance in your eye contact, for example if you have an interview of about

20 minutes, it doesn’t mean that u are continuously starring to your boss for 20 minutes

or when you come out you didn’t even know the color of eyes of the boss.

3) Eye rolling : during an interview eye rolling makes  bad impression of yours. during

interview the interviewer think that you are not interested in chatting or you have some

other better options

4) Posture: always try to sit straight and be alert, don’t try to be over confident.

 5) Tapping: never try to tap your fingers or foot during an interview .it makes

irritation to the interviewer which can lead to rejections.

6) Voice :  This is mainly for telephonic interview, always keep your voice normal,

not too loud nor too low. Always be confident while answering your questions, don’t

make use of such words ”like”, ‘hmm’ ”ahh” , it makes your interviewer think that you

are not confident or you are not listening him properly.

The Best Advice You Can Hear About Writing a Resume

You might have experienced a lot of struggle and spent crazy time for just making that ‘Perfect’ Resume ,Here are some tips and Advice on how to write a Perfect Resume.

But when do you know that it’s ready to be posted online or sent with a job application?

Almost everyone has an their own opinion on the best format and what to include in a resume. In the end, there are five basic areas to pay attention for getting as close to “perfect” as possible.

1.Simplify the format and content:

Your resume needs to be easily readable – or it will not be read.So don’t make use of any fancy fonts .Choose a font?, such as Arial, Calibri or Helvetica. The font size in the body of the resume should be 11-point or larger. Otherwise, hiring managers will struggle to read it.

Type your name in bold at the top in 14-point or larger font. Don’t forget your contact information.

Headings, such as “Work Experience” and “Education,” should stand out. The headings should be larger font than the text in the body of the resume, preferably 14-point. Bold and capitalize the names of companies, and bold or italicize your job titles to set them off.

Pay very close attention to grammar and spelling. Remove all “Track Changes” markings. Check the “Review” panel in Microsoft Word to make sure that they are not just hidden from view and can’t show up on someone else’s computer when they open it.

2. Include a career profile:

Your career summary at the top should always be tailored to the posting you’re applying for. It should give the employer a brief dose of information that focuses on what you can bring to the role and company.

3. Build your “Work Experience” and “Education” sections:

If you are currently working, “Education” should go below “Experience.” The only exception would be if you are changing careers and do not have work experience field in the new field. In that case, your “Education” can be above “Work Experience” if it’s directly related to the field you want to enter.

Use reverse chronological order for work experience. Include your company names, very brief descriptions if they’re not well known, locations, dates and your titles.

4. Include other information in separate sections:

Have a separate section for any honors or awards received from work or school. If you graduated more than 10 years ago, only note significant scholarships or honors. Include the name of the award, institution awarding it and year received.

List any noteworthy presentations you’ve given or publications you’ve contributed to or authored.

5. Note additional skills:

List technical skills that are unique or relevant to the job you are applying to. If you know foreign languages, belong to organizations or have done any significant or relevant volunteer work, include that here.Highlighting your relevant experience right off the bat and demonstrating specific examples of your work and its results are good rules of thumb, no matter what type you use. Equally as important are proper grammar, spelling and consistent font and formatting. Take the time to get these elements right because first impressions on paper are more powerful than you might imagine.

When to give up job search

You know the best way to change thing is to take a break. You’ll come back refresh with a new perspective. Here are two signs you should back away from the search for a little bit, plus ideas for exactly how to do it.

  • You’re applying to every job

The issue is this that hiring manager can smell it miles away they want a candidate who can contribute to the company without selfishness. If it’s clear that you are applied to every whether it meets their requirements or not then there is not a compelling reason to move your candidacy forward.

  •  Take a hiatus

Take few days to think that the job you have applied for is really the job you      would love to work. Once you have some clarity, get back to the search, but this time, be strategic. If a job does not rank9 out of 10 in terms of both your level of excitement and competency, then it’s not worth applying.

  • You’re obsessing

At some point pretty much everyone obsesses when waiting to hear back about a job. It’s normal give it a lot of thought- after all landing a new roll can mean a good deal of change, and that’s exciting (even a bit scary)

You know it’s taken over your life. It’s all you talk about- and you are visiting with anyone who will listen just to discuss it some more. You turn down social invitations, quit going out because every spare moment goes to checking your email and waiting for call.

  • Take a hiatus

You want to follow up on any emails a timely manner, but no, you don’t need to check your inbox throughout a meal with friends. Give the hunt no more than 100% and the rest of the time, step away from the computer and invest in the other parts of your life.

Behavioral interviewing

How to get through the behavioral interviews?

Today, the methods of behavioral interviewing are followed by more number of employers to screen the candidates for various jobs and as a result now it is all the more important for job aspirants to learn how to perform well in this type of recruitments.

While the traditional methods for screening the candidates are not so predictive in nature, the new method of interviewing which is adopted by many employers is found highly predictive of future behavior of the candidate on the job. When compared to other methods of interviewing, behavioral interviewing is found more objective. This new interviewing method is very different in nature and it looks highly probing. The new method of interviewing makes the candidate to expose his true nature and in this method it is very difficult to hide the truth. In this method it is very difficult or even impossible for the candidate to give answer just for the purpose of impressing the employer. From the answers given by the candidate the employer will identify the specific aspects of the candidate’s behavior.

Preparing for the interview

Behavioral interviewing is aimed to identify the experiences as well as behaviors of the candidate so as to decide whether he or she will be successful in a particular job in future. The interviewer will try to find out whether the candidate has the professional experience, capabilities, skills, behaviors and aptitude that are required for the particular position.

Behavioral interviewing enables the interviewer to assess the candidate on the basis of a set of characteristics that includes professionalism, self-confidence, critical thinking, leadership qualities, willingness to participate in teamwork, self-starter qualities, willingness to learn as well as travel and various other characteristics. Pointed questions will be asked to find out whether the candidates possess the qualities that are essential for the particular job. The rating system is used by many employers nowadays to evaluate the candidates.

The candidates are expected to give thorough answers. By way of knowing the types of skills that are required for the particular job, the candidate can prepare well for the interview. In order to find out the particular kinds of behaviors that the company requires, the candidate should research and gather maximum information about the company and also should discuss with people who are already employed by the same company.

Describe situations with apt examples

In behavioral interviewing, the candidates should avoid giving answers in general terms since the interviewer will be expecting specific and detailed answers. While speaking about a particular situation the candidate should provide a brief description and then highlight the action taken by the candidate that facilitated a positive outcome. The candidate should frame his answer in three different parts – task, action plan and outcome. The candidate can present his answer in the form of a story with apt examples. However, since a variety of questions can be asked in this type of interviews, it is not easy to prepare for the same.

The candidate can be equipped with a few stories that can be presented as the answers to various questions about behaviors. The candidate can prepare in advance a set of apt examples if he could find out the kind of questions that are going to be asked in the interview. The examples may be taken from his internships, previous jobs, school projects, team activities, community services, hobbies or any other activities.

Facing the Second Interview

Don’t consider second interview as hiring

A common mistake that is done by most candidates when they get the call second time that they are hired. No, a call for interview second time does not promise that you will be hired. It is just another call where the hiring managers want to check out certain attributes of the candidates. You may be even called for another round of interview depending upon the recruitment process of the organization.

Thus, when you appear for the interview second time make sure that you maintain the same composed mindset that you had during your first interview. It will help you impress the interviewers as you had done earlier.

There is difference between the first one and the second one so while you attend the second one make sure that you have prepared for a HR round too. With regard to the increasing competition among uncountable numbers of job seekers nowadays, getting job requires each applicant to go extra mile in preparation and take to some specific job interview advice. You need to be reminded that anytime you are invited for an interview, you are essentially selling yourself. Are you ready to sell inferior quality with unattractive packaging?

Be detailed in all your answer

Try as much as possible not to respond vaguely in case your employer request to know your previous responsibilities in your formal place of work. If you are an artist for instance, it is inadequate to merely say you designed book covers. Always ensure that you are more explicit including collaborating with authors to make their ideas a reality, designing of progressive-style book covers and some more.

Avoid the mistake of repeating what you have already mentioned in job application

In case you are asked to tell them about yourself, ensure that you go beyond the apparent facts like your name, your address, your previous employment, date of birth, and some others. If you merely mention these and then stop there, you have not said anything as far as the interviewers are concerned. Reason being that they are not new to them since they are already stated in your resume. In actual fact, the interviewers are more interested in knowing your areas in interests and the ways you can be effective in your position if you are eventually hired.

Show competence and do not be late to the interview

Coming late to job interview in the height of incompetence and immaturity on the part of the applicants gives the interviewer the bad impression about you. Apart from the fact that you can lose the allocated time, it also gives the impression that you are not taking the job too serious. On the others hand, advised not to come to interview too early as it may show that you are too desperate about the job.

Ensure the you did not malevolent your former employer

In case you are asked the purpose of leaving your previous job, ensure that you did not make any bad comment about your previous working place despite that they do something bad to you. But ensure that you are always on their positive side by just saying that ‘you are looking for higher place of interest in your profession or career where you can have better challenge that can advance you in every bit of your life. Be reminded that if you say negative word concerning your previous company, the interviewer will believe that you can do the same to their company and this could make you lose the job.

Make sure you are corporate in your mode of dressing

It is very important to dress safe by wearing business outfit to the interview in order to show your professionalism. This gives the interview the impression that you put job in an important place. Ensure that you are more presentable and moderate. Avoid using strong perfume which could irritate your interviewer.

The majority of Americans are “at-will employees”. This means employer-employee relation can end up for any reason (or no reason) as long as the employee is not being fired for discriminatory reason such as race, gender, or sexual orientation, or is not covered by an employment contract.

For employees being hired at-will means they are able to leave or quit a job at any time or giving no notice at all.

For an employer, for any reason of termination from poor performance to company organize differently to the whims of upper management-is acceptable, so long as they are not defined discriminatory, and the employer is not protected by a contract or union agreement. interview strength

Knowing and using your interview strengths

One of the questions you will always expect whenever you are getting ready for an interview will always come in this form. What are your greatest strengths? If you are coming to the interview table for the first time without good preparation and research, this might put you off immediately. But a good answer to this will immediately draw you closer to the job. Interview strengths are mostly hinged on those things you are born or blessed with. Remember, they are not your skills. Skills are those things you have leant in the course of life or you have really developed out of experience. There are two things you are tested about with this question. The first is to know how well you know yourself and the other is to know how you can express your self.

There is no absolute answer to what your strengths are, but you have to search inside and know those things the employer will find very interesting about you and those things that are very important or even needed in the job you are applying.

You can tell them you are a strong and natural leader or you have good sense of initiative.  Your interview strengths can be that you are very creative in any field you find yourself or that you are the type of person who will make sure you take any job you start to a very good conclusion. Your interview strength can be a good deadline beater, quick leaner, problem solver, and conflict resolver. It can also be that you can work with articulation and precision even when you are under pressure.

There is also the act of trying to turn your weaknesses into strengths. This will include telling them you are too helpful, a hard worker that works too hard or even a perfectionist that will always want things done the perfect way even at the first time. Try not to be boastful about this but in a very assertive mood, give it to them in the most precise and humble way.

Why should I hire you

Why should I hire you?

Interview, this term itself sends butterflies flying into most people’s stomach, yet you cannot miss the interview process without answering questions. There are many common questions, yet why should I hire you is a very common question and the answer varies with each person depending on the situation, qualification, experience and so on.

Common questions

Every interview question offer the hiring person or recruiter information about you. Many interviewers ask these questions:

  • Why you consider being the best candidate for this job?
  • Why should I hire you?
  • Why are you considering being a right fit for this job position?
  • What do you bring to this position?

There is a need to be prepared to close a deal and so having answers to these questions really helps. There may be situations when your interviewer does not pose these questions, yet being prepared with answers and considering ways to communicate ensures you clear the interview process successfully.

Why this question is asked most times?

Why should I hire you? This is a question asked in most interviews and this is because they wish to confirm to hire the right candidate for the position. Candidates mostly reach the interview stage with their qualifications and the winning candidate must be suitably qualified to have a stand in a competitive job market.

A company also considers hiring as a risk and recommending a candidate to hire is a personal career risk for each recruiter representative of the company. If the hired candidate performs well, the Mr. Recruiter is seen as brilliant and if the candidate makes a bad show, the Mr. Recruiter appears a dummy and his reputation suffers.

This question of hiring you revolves around you selling yourself to him. You have to convince him of these things such as:

  • You can deliver best results in your work
  • You will fit and be a useful addition to the team
  • You have combination of experience and skills to make you appear outstanding
  • Hiring you will ensure the company profit and it is a smart decision

How to Answer: Why Should I Hire You?

Answering gives you a chance to show your highlights. Ensure to answer with three or four best reason. The reasons must be really strong. Do not keep rattling about yourself.

Use this opportunity to show your impressive strengths and must be the best selling points that are aligned with requirements suitable to the job description. Your main best reasons can be a combination of these:

  • Experience in the same industry and performing certain tasks
  • Soft and Technical skills
  • Awards/accolades for key accomplishments
  • Education /Training

Accomplishments are good bets and when you describe a key accomplishment, demonstrate a perfect competency. If you have strong skills in programming and if you are able to combine with the experience of team leadership, it appears a great package to fit the position of a senior programmer.

Practice to answer this question, but do not memorize any script. Remember, you should appear confident as you deliver the answer about your commitment and abilities.

Skype interview tips

Skype interview tips

Are you refreshing the Skype inbox for several times? Finally, has it come and you are selected for the Skype interview. Hold on, Skype interview is preferred to a phone now as it shows more about you and if you will fit their team. This means, prepare for the interview, make sure to get it with these Skype interview tips.

No excuses

If it is Skype interview, do not cut excuses to come over phone by saying your internet connection is crappy, or you do not have a Skype account, etc.  If you want, make things work and download Skype and email to your interviewer with your username. If you deny, it is a No to the very first question, so avoid saying no and reply with a yes.

Maintain a professional username

Keep your username professional to avoid making any bad first impression. Keep it simple to read and type.  Do not give an impression of being boring in using your name.

Dress perfectly

Skype interview tips highlight the dressing sense. Just because it is a Skype interview, you cannot sit in your college hoodie; instead wear as you attend an in-person interview.  This gives you also a feel of attending an interview and with the right dress code; the interviewer also has a positive approach towards you.

Consider the location

Everything behind you matters. Ensure to have a neutral, clean background and proper lighting. Do not consider a coffee shop as your internet is strong here or also avoid sitting near a window or in the basements. Also check the location behind you, it should not appear shabby. It is alright if the wall appears plain or has a simple wall piece behind.

Proper headset

Having a proper headset is essential for a Skype interview. If your headset has a talk piece, make use of it.  Your computer easily picks up background noise in a public space. Thus, using a headset helps in hearing clearly with less distraction of the background noises.

Maintain Eye contact

Look at your webcam. It will make you appear present and personable. Ensure to keep your eyes open to the video that is in the bottom corner. Pro-tip: Position your laptop on books stack to set the camera at proper eye-level. It is a flattering angle to maintain proper eye contact.

Handle glitches with charm

You may practice a lot to perfection, yet things go wrong at the right hour. Your interviewer also is aware of such glitches. Thus, if something happens, stay calm and friendly as you troubleshoot. If you wish to hang up the call, do not hesitate to ask and try again. This demonstrates your handling tact during a stressful situation. Do not start crying, begging or cursing the situation. In fact, your well earned situation may turn wrong.

Make a test call before your interview to your friend and ensure your audio and camera are properly working. Ask them about the sound quality and if they are able to see you clearly and about the lighting.

The bottom line is to follow the Skype interview tips and treat it as in-person interview. Give cues of being amiable and that you are a good listener. Also send a thank you note once the interview is complete.

Pro Tips

In case even after sending this note, you do not hear anything in a week’s time, follow up again. There is no harm in being pleasantly persistent.

Waiting between a job application and the time of hearing back from them is daunting.  You can always consider writing a follow up email after application and set yourself apart, just do not be pushy.

Writing the Followup Email Tips

  • Give a few days. The general consensus is your follow-up should be done after a week’s or ten days time. This is because there may be many as you, who have applied and sorting the applications to find suitable candidates takes time.
  • Honestly, some hiring managers do not prefer receiving follow up emails. They consider it a tactic to grab attention, while some consider it your passion and enthusiasm making you outstanding from the crowd.
  • Address to the correct person your email to whom you applied for the job. Address him by his name or write as “Dear Hiring Manager”.
  • Maintain perfect greeting and subject line. Do not forget to add “Dear” before the hiring manager’s name. You may start the email body of the letter immediately. Do not become informal and say “Hi” or “Hey”, keep things formal.
  • Keep the subject, “Application Follow-Up for the Position”. If there is some reference number, add it.

Mention the position you applied for. Keep it simple and short. Just start with the date you applied for the position, and that you did not hear from them. You can say like this:

Dear Mr. (Name of the hiring manager),

I applied, last week, for the position (name) you advertised. I have not heard from your Company regarding this position and wish to confirm my application was received.

In one or two sentences, inform the hiring manager your excitement to work in this position and how you will be a proper fit. This reinforces you to be considered for the position.

Please contact me any time for clarifications or materials, looking forward to hearing and thank you for your time.

Questions to ask interviewers

The right questions to ask interviewers

The interview process is never a lopsided proceeding where you are just bombarded with a lot of questions by the interviewers and you answer them and leave. When you succeed in establishing a very good relationship with your interviewers, you will be in a better position to land the job. This might not mean wooing, though the concept of purposeful wooing for a job is not bad anyway. But you might be interested in knowing some other things about the post you are applying for and the firm in question. Questions to ask interviewers will make you access the firm and know whether they will really give you what you want if eventually you work with them.

The questions to ask interviewers will normally come when the interview is coming to the close and should not be used to interrupt the interviewers when the interview is still going on. You should try always to ask questions that you need their answers and the ones you are sure to get the answers. Questions to ask interviewers should not be very rude and intruding and should not evoke bad feelings. Also ask questions that will portray the level of research you have done and the level of knowledge you have about the firm in question. They should not be about salaries, benefits, leaves and vacations. They don’t tell well about you.

Questions to ask interviewers should include, how would you explain the responsibilities that come with this job? Is this position new? What did the person who handled the job before achieve? What is the management style of the firm and is this going to be a team work or for the individual? Will the job involve much travelling and when can I expect to hear from you? These are the most appropriate questions to ask interviewers.

Worst body language mistakes during an interview

If you have an impressive resume and flawless cover letter, fully researched company and good preparation for the interview but not able to keep smile on your face  or forget to make eye contact with your manager, then you will be out of job. During the first few minutes of interview, the candidates can give hundreds of non-verbal expressions to the hiring manager and those expressions make more  impact on recruiters than your words. Therefore proper use of body language during the interview show that you are physically or emotionally engaged  and different from others.

1) Eye contact–

Eye contact is the best way to connect people. That’s why you have to make balance. Sometime when you look too much it seems you are agressive and if you look very little makes you dishonest and have something to hide.  Eye rolling should be avoided. Most of time people roll their eyes when they disagree with someone. You have to maintain your eye contact but not staring at the person.

2) Your posture–

Once you greet with the interviewer, relax your body. Try to find appropriate place for your belongings. Never put your purse on your lap or on table. Sit straight and avoid to touch your face and hairs.

3) Handshake–

Once you are in seat, make eye contact , offer palm to palm handshake. Your handshake can leave employer with impression , depending upon how you do. Soft and firm handshake provides a positive attitude.

4) Avoid tapping–

If you are tapping  your fingers or toes , manager may get the impression that you are not interested in job.

5) Voice–

Try to speak polite, not so fast or slow. If your tone is not good, employer believe that you are over confident  and try to avoid words “um,ah.or like” words as these words show that you are not interested.

Here are some of the ways by which you can figure out those clues and correct them..

a) work with friend– Try to interview with your friend who will tell you what kind of impression you have to give.

b) Practice yourself– Try to videotape yourself and it show you what non-verbal ticks you have  to practice.interview

Ask yourself if you are being too narrow in your search or if there is a piece of the puzzle you are omitting in the search process.

Maintain your support system (and don’t be afraid to ask for help)

Stress can make you withdraw from friends, associates and family. Most people really do want to help however you need to let them know HOW they can help you. Talk to a friend or mentor, join a support group, or engage the support of a career coach for professional guidance.

Set a clear plan and stick to it

Develop a marketing plan with realistic timeframes and realistic goals and objectives. If it doesn’t work, make adjustments, and discuss them with a trusted associate who understands your job market and someone who understands the industry you are targeting.

Positive action leads to positive outcome

Be brave enough to acknowledge that your job search campaign has stalled and then be creative to get it moving again. Remember that you do not have to do this alone. Set agenda

Once you’ve figured out who your audience is, work on the goals and purpose of each interview from your perspective. While your goal is to get to the next round of interviews and land a job offer, think about the building blocks to getting there. For each interview, determine what the interviewer is looking for and what you want to convey about your own skill set, experience and personality. Each interviewer plays a different role in the hiring process and looks for specific things. Think about your overall story and emphasize your selling points to each interviewer.

Consider alternatives

Why should I hire you

Why should I hire you?

Even though this is a great opportunity but selling yourself can be an intimidating task. Not only you need to know your words carefully but the tone and attitude you are carrying.

Be confident. Be your own don’t be fake to impress as you will miss out the opportunity.

The interviewer wants to know how you stand out among the other applicants. Therefore, focus on one or two qualities you have that might be unique, or more difficult to find in other interviewees.

For example, if you are very experienced with a certain skill that the job requires, say so. This is your chance to tell the interviewer why you would be an invaluable employee.

The question is: why should we hire you? This is a great question. There is not one reason or one talent that fits me for this job because I am still learning. When it seems to hold a challenge that is close to what I have done before, but a step forward — otherwise I’d be repeating what I have already done before.
